摘要: Oral cancer is a major public health problem in many Western Pacific and South Asian regions, largely attributable to the widespread areca nut and betel quid chewing habit [1]. Betel quid with or without tobacco and areca nut are classified as Class 1 carcinogens by the International Agency on Research on Cancer [2]. From the global data, Taiwan is within the top 5 among the high incidence countries for oral cancer in the world [3]. In this commentary we wish to report on the incidence and current trends of the disease in Taiwan and to describe some of the important government policy and strategies introduced in order to control betel quid use aimed at preventing oral cancer among the Taiwanese population.
