Abstract: This paper reports the development of a process using surface organosilanization to generate aniline/pyrrole monomers covalently functionalized on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces for the fabrication of robust thin films of conductive polymers by oxidative chemical polymerization. Compared to conventional methods commonly used for preparing thin films of conductive polymers which just physically adhere on PDMS substrates, our process can enhance the mechanical robustness of conductive polymers, such as polyaniline (PANI) or polypyrrole (PPY), deposited on PDMS surfaces by covalent bonding. This work also demonstrates that (i) our process allows for integrated thin films of PANI/PPY being selectively patterned on PDMS substrates by soft lithography and (ii) the resultant integrated thin films of PANI/PPY patterned on PDMS substrates can function as devices for conductometric transduction and chemical sensing.
