摘要: Multiple factors contribute to the decline of physical function in older adults. Results from many studies have found several risk factors of this decline, but rare studies have been conducted in Taiwan. The aim of this five-year cohort study was to examine the association between func-tional decline and several risk factors identified in the previous studies.Data were from a three-wave cohort study of aging, the Functioning and Aging Study in Taipei. The cohort includes 907 older adults participat-ing in the 2005 National Health Interview Survey in Taiwan. Two fol-low-up interviews were conducted in 2006 and 2008-9. Functional sta-tus was assessed using six items of the Activities of Daily Living and six items of the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. The physical functioning was further classified as being independent, with mild dis-ability, with moderate disability, with severe disability, and dependency.Risk factors considered in the study include several factors of sociode-mography, depressive status, cognitive function, chronic diseases and conditions, and lifestyle behaviors. We used both the GEE and mixed linear regression models to identify factors in relation to the decline of physical function across different waves of data. In the final models, older adults with the characteristics of older age, women, depressive symptoms, cognitive impairments, stroke, diabetes, and being seden-tary had higher risk of being disabled. The factors found in the study may help understand the causes responsible for the functional decline in the elderly, and be further used to identify older people at risk of devel-oping physical disability.
