    題名: Association between environmental tobacco smoke exposure and allergic diseases in a population-based study of Asian children: PATCH study

    摘要: Background: Previous studies have shown harmful effects of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) on respiratory health of children, whereas few studies have used cotinine as a biomarker of ETS exposure, especially in Asian children. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between ETS exposure and allergic diseases in a population sample of Asian children. Methods: Children aged 5 – 18 years (N = 1315) in the Prediction of Allergies in Taiwanese Children (PATCH) study were evaluated using questionnaires, anthropometric measurements, and serum cotinine levels as an index of ETS exposure.Results: After adjusting for confounders,significant positive associations were found between serum cotinine levels and rhinitis ever (odds ratio [OR], 2.95; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.15 – 7.60) and current rhinitis (OR, 2.71; 95% CI, 1.07 – 6.89),while a marginally significant association was found for physician-diagnosed rhinitis (OR, 2.26; 95% CI, 0.88 – 5.83). There was no evidence of effect modification by sex. In contrast, there was no significant associ ation between serum cotinine levels and asthma or eczema after adjusting for confounders.Conclusion: Data from this populationbased study provides further evidence supporting the association between exposure to ETS, as measured by serum cotinine, and rhinitis in Asian children living in Taiwan, which highlights the need to raise public health awareness about the harmful effects of ETS exposure on children 0 s respiratory health.
